Ronnie L. White, a 19-year-old being held in an Upper Marlboro jail after being arrested in a hit-and-run death of a police officer, was found strangled to death in his cell.
More than 450 guards work at the 20-year-old facility, which had an average daily population of 1,489 prisoners during the 2007 fiscal year. White was being held in a cell by himself, to protect him from other prisoners, because of the high profile of his alleged crime.
Despite the fact that no other inmates had access to White, Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson "immediately moved to curb speculation that White's death was the result of police officers seeking revenge, saying the slaying was "unrelated to any act" by police."
Oh? Though I didn't see mention of it in this report, I was told today that White's cell conveniently lacked any video surveillance. A big, fat "attaboy" to anyone who can confirm that.
I don't know how they conduct traffic stops in PG County, but Maryland troopers have an idiotic habit of walking out into the middle of the highway to face oncoming traffic and motion motorists to the side of the road. I don't know if this was the case here, but if it wasn't, it's only a matter of time before this type of thing does get an officer killed.
At this point there's nothing to indicate that White allegedly hit Cpl. Richard Findley intentionally. And it goes without saying that Findley's death was a tragedy. It should, however, also go without saying that White deserved his day in court.
