It seems I have 'stepped in it' this time!
I wrote an article yesterday on Barney Frank, that uncovered yet more problems from a politician that I consider to be a leach on society. His past and present behavior and policies have caused us all severe hardship, and yet the article seems to have attracted the ire of one group of people that floored me. This would be the group that favors the idea of legalizing marijuana. Let’s start with the statement I made.
“Frank has also ventured out onto the limb with Ron Paul over legalizing marijuana. Even his mainstream buddies in the Democratic Congress wouldn’t be stupid enough to crawl out on that limb with him, but he sees fit to buck not only mainstream democrats but mainstream America.”
It seems a few readers saw fit to attack my declaration, to shoot the messenger so to speak. The first sentence is fact. It seems that so far no other politicians have joined the bandwagon to push for legalization, although I’m sure some politician on the “fringe,” or willing to make a gamble, might take up the fight also. Some poll figures declare that as many as 40% of the citizens want marijuana legalized. With that being said, the majority doesn’t. So with all this information now in the light, I really don’t see anything that I said was wrong. If the supporters of legalization took offence at the part where I said….. wouldn’t be stupid enough to crawl out on that limb with him,…..I apologize, I was talking more about political repercussions then to slander their fight to legalize.
Obama has just this week enacted tougher laws pertaining to smoking laws involving tobacco. Tobacco in my opinion will never be outlawed. However the cash cow that the tobacco industry creates is hard for politicians to give up. In our little part of the world, (Maryland) we have enjoyed a windfall amount of money based on the successful law suit by Peter Angelos. That money was to be paid out to us over a 25 year period, and now we are well on our way to the eventual end. Each year we get $530 million, this is like a drug to our state politicians. Once the money from this industry, that we already know, causes cancer runs out, where do we think the money they are used to spending will come from? Some supporters of legalization cite all the money we will save in our judicial and penal system. This may be true, but the same people that think it will save us money in that regard tend to believe that because when it is legal, the price as one commenter said….”it’s cheaper then beer” will still be cheap, they are only fooling themselves. If it is legalized the FDA will be forced to control it. The additional staffing needed to do this will be immense, and if true to past governmental experience, will be overly staffed.
This new industry will fall under the very same lawsuits that the tobacco industry experienced, because of the health hazards. Why would the government stick their necks out on this issue? They may very well do it, for no other reason than taxes. We are experiencing two industries right now that tax the product more than the actual profit these companies make, per pack or per gallon……yes the tobacco industry and the gasoline industry. Our government sees fit to tell the public what horrible industries these are while all the time pocketing more in taxes then the industries make. The next time profits are declared on Exxon, think to yourself, whatever they made, the government made more on the taxes to them.
I won’t begin to say which side is right on the legalization of marijuana issue, nor frankly do I care. What I do care about is every penny the government charges in tax gets passed along to the end user, that’s “us” folks. Now consider that the government of the United States of America makes more profit then ANY company in America. Why is that? They don’t offer a product for the return, only a service, the profit is enormous. The only problem is the more additional employees the government hires over the last administration, only creates more of a cost to us.
The larger the government, the more people of control will have an effect on your life, is this what we want?
