Senate may be to blame for no decision on troop escalation in Afghanistan
It was brought to light this week that in fact the Senate could be to blame for delayed action on troop escalation in Afghanistan. It seems that Senators diverted $2.6 billion in accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition, and training of our armed forces, and instead redistributed those funds for their own “pet projects,” commonly known as “earmarks,” or pork barrel projects.
These funds were distributed to 778 projects, including $25 million to a World War II museum in the University of New Orleans, and a $20 million to launch an educational institute, named after the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
Winslow Wheeler, a former Senate staffer that specialized in defense funding and oversight for both Republicans and Democrats alike says, "In 30 years on Capitol Hill, I never saw Congress mangle the defense budget as badly as this year, he went on to say, "The Senate is putting favorable headlines back home above our men and women fighting on the front lines."
