On Tuesday, Xbox Live sent out a preview of its upcoming dashboard update to a select few Xbox Live Gold Members. This update contains a number of features, not the least of which is improved speed, an updated Netflix system that allows up to eight people to watch movies together and a new Avatar Marketplace.

Those who received the update were chosen by random from a pool of Xbox Live users who completed a short survey from Microsoft. This survey, and the entry into the Preview lottery, was announced by Xbox's community manager, Major Nelson.

But from what we've seen, many users don't know if they received the update. Here's a few tips to know whether you're set to go with the new features or whether you'll be waiting for August 11 when the update is released to all Xbox users:

  • Did you sign up for it and take the survey?
  • Was your survey completed correctly (Read here to learn how to check)?
  • Did you receive an email confirmation titled “Welcom to the Xbox Live Preview on Connect!”?
  • Have you restarted your Xbox in the last 24 hours?
  • Did your system update when you restarted?
  • When you log in, do you see a tab “Xbox Preview” between your “Game Marketplace” and “My Xbox” tabs?

If you answered "no" to any of these questions, you likely don't have the update.

If this is the first you've heard of this preview, go to Major Nelson's blog post on the Update Preview, follow the directions and maybe you'll get in at this late date. It's worth a shot.
