In 1992, Bill Clinton beat George H.W. Bush and then proceeded to have two very bad years as President of the United States culminating with a resurgence of a shell shocked Republican Party through the Contract with America.
In 2009, a new Democratic President is learning the job, dodging really stupid incidents like the Air Force One flyover in New York City, and has just finished his first 100 days that was highlighted by tens of thousands of people stewing over taxes while brandishing tea bags.
As lackluster as Barack Obama’s first 100 days have been, compared to the ineptitude of the Republican Party and the RNC, Obama’s biggest problem in 2010 is going to be to keep his party focused on winning more seats instead of fighting his agenda.
In the past week, the Republican Party lost Arlen Specter (PA), and with the gay marriage bashing rhetoric by Chairman Steele, they risk alienating two moderate women members of the United States Senate from Maine (Snowe and Collins). Oh yes, I failed to mention that Rush Limbaugh then decides to attack Colin Powell… the one Republican that is universally respected by the American people.
If this keeps up, Obama is not going to have to worry about any legitimate challenge to his Presidency or losing his filibuster proof majority in the Senate in 2010. The RNC, and its media allies, are too busy fighting among themselves over the carcass of a devastated political party to care about something trivial like a mid-term election.
