Four Senators and a Presidency

This year has been a year of political firsts for our country. In the Democratic primaries, we had the first woman to win primaries and the first person of color to win the nomination of a major political party. In the Republican Party, we have a nominee who, if elected, will be the oldest person to take the oath of office for a first presidential term.

Obama’s newly minted running mate, Joe Biden, has a first of his own: the first person from the state of Delaware to be placed in nomination for Vice-President (or even to be on a national ticket). The most intriguing first could hinge on the Vice-Presidential choice of John McCain; the first time in history that all four nominees will come from the same governmental body, the United States Senate.

I sincerely doubt that McCain would go with Joe Lieberman. McCain would be better served to pick Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota who may be able to swing that state to the Republican ticket for the first time since 1972. However, an all-Senate member national ticket would be ironic in one sense…who would have guessed that Hillary Clinton would be the Senator on the outside looking in?
