Obama's Tightrope Act Begins Today

Over the next few weeks Barack Obama’s effectiveness as President will be put to the ultimate test. From all indications Obama will end tonight with two victories and be within striking distance of reaching 2,118 delegates. The last six months was a cakewalk in diplomacy compared to the job that he has to accomplish between now and the Democratic Convention in Denver. Obama has several difficult issues to deal with and they all involve Hillary Clinton.
- Attempt to find common ground with Senator Clinton so that her and former President Bill Clinton can be an asset to the Democrat Party instead of a distraction in the fall election. This means finding a place within his cabinet that will give her a policy portfolio that she is passionate about over the next six months.
- Heal the gender/racial divide encouraged during the primary campaign. The incredible rise in voter registration during the primary is not a good sign for Republicans. The only way the Republican ticket can win in November is if the Democrats are divided. Obama has got to find a way of reestablishing the political coalition of white women and African-Americans that has existed in this country since the 1860’s.
As I predicted, the superdelegates will begin migrating to Obama with urgency today. Obama has to walk a tightrope to make sure that he is respectful of Senator Clinton while moving towards being the leader of the Democrat Party. The irony of the situation is startling: Obama may have beat Hillary Clinton to win the nomination but he needs her support to win the White House in November.
