I don’t know what’s more aggravating than trying to find something you know you have and haven’t thrown out. Most of the time the difficulty of finding it is directly proportional to how long it has been since you last used it. (My math teacher would be ecstatic about my remembering directly proportional). Not always, sometimes it happens with something we have just put down. As maddening as that is, the search area is usually well defined, and we normally find it in plain view where we know we just looked. How can you not believe in Gremlins?
The search area becomes huge when the item hasn’t been used for awhile. I spent most of Sunday looking for an item I had not used for a long time. I searched everywhere. It was Easter Sunday but I was not being blessed with kind thoughts regarding one inanimate object that had wandered off into the bowels of my countless little storage areas crammed into nooks that we all should have organized long ago.
I was not to be denied and finally I moved the box it had fallen behind and there it was, covered in dust. Blowing off the dust, I could barely make out the Seattle Mariner logo imprinted on the little broom I display when ever we sweep another team in a road series.
It was September of 2007 when we last swept the A’s in their house. I didn't bother finding the broom for that one. I think I may have burned my Mariners hat by then. Digging out information on sweeps requires finding a web page I haven’t been able to locate but I have no doubt it exists. The only other road sweep for the Mariners I could come up with was against the Red Sox in a three game series in August of 2006.
When was the last time we won a 1-0 pitching duel on the road? I could dig it up but it is Easter so consider this my little Easter egg hunt just for you. No prize but no bunny to clean up after either.
In an earlier article I asked the team to give me something to write about going into our home opener and they turned Easter into Christmas. I know the season is just getting started but take a look at this:
Western Division
----------------
W L PCT GB Home Away Div Streak
Seattle 5 2 .714 --- 0-0 5-2 3-0 Won 4
LA Angels 3 3 .500 1 1/2 3-3 0-0 1-2 Won 1
Texas 3 3 .500 1 1/2 3-0 0-3 0-0 Lost 3
Oakland 2 4 .333 2 1/2 0-3 2-1 2-4 Lost 3

When was the last time we saw that? Before you hit the stats sites maybe it is time to stop looking back and start looking forward.
Tuesday’s series start against the Angels is not going to make or break the season win or lose but winning this series will start to turn heads. The pundits will start speculating on whether the Mariners really do have a team and whether they do really have a chance in the American League West in 2009.
Tomorrow’s series opens on a somber note. There will be a memorial for former
general manager Dick Vertlieb, ex-Mariners pitcher Dave Roberts, Ed "Tuba Man" McMichael who was savagely beaten to death by young thugs and Nick Adenhart, the pitcher killed by a drunk driver. Adenhart had been scheduled to pitch the game. My previous article was a call to arms against drunk driving in this country. Tuba Man was a fixture at Mariner and Seahawks games and his death is a testimony on how inhumane people can be. Nothing justifies his loss and he will be missed by many.
The opening game is a sell out, if for no other reason than the debut of Ken Griffey Jr. in the house that Griffey built. Add to that the above early season standings and we are off to one awesome start. The Angels are not going to lie down and witness a Mariner revival without a fight. They are a force to be reckoned with. I think all most of us want to see is really competitive baseball. Last nights game in Oakland was like a breath of fresh air. Games like that are what seasons should be made of.
