The Obama administration is defending, yet again, the wide ranging illegal wire tapping program of the Bush administration despite fiercely criticizing this policy during the Presidential campaign.
His Justice Department is advancing the usual circular logic argument of "national security" in defending the government against a suit brought on behalf of AT&T customers who suspect that their communications were illegally intercepted by federal authorities.
Here, yet again, is another reason to see that the partisan bickering our two political parties engage in is nothing more than Kabuki Theater.
Behind our facile partisan chatter lies the stark truth that the Democrats and Republicans have no differences of substance. Symbolically they have all the differences in the world but in the real world- the world of the tangible- they have next to none.
Obama’s administration, on all major issues, is continuing the same policies of the Bush administration but with slightly more nuanced rhetoric and tricks of propaganda. For example, Obama is closing the international embarrassments that are the GITMO torture camps but he defends Bush era war crime policies on torture. Obama says the US doesn’t torture anymore but yet won’t rule out “rendering” suspects to one of the many sadist regimes the US federal government currently props up all over the world so they can torture them. Change you can believe in?
Obama has kept the same gang in the Pentagon and the CIA that were there under Bush.
Obama has kept on the same Wall Street and Federal Reserve insiders who got us into the current economic circumstances as well. The same insider thieves and con men (all as guilty as Madoff by the way) who got us here are also the same ones who are empowered to “save us”.
Obama’s “withdrawal plan” is a loophole ridden mess of tangled rhetoric and propaganda that actually promises no such thing. And even as he talks of withdrawal spending and construction on permanent bases in Iraq go on with abandon.
Despite the near complete continuity on all major issues of import between the Obama and Bush administrations you would think, looking at our mainstream media and reading partisan sites like these, that they were polar opposites.
On the surface they engage in battles over cultural symbols that appeal to their respective ideological bases. Eric Holder, the current attorney general, made a speech on race that generated hundreds of articles, thousands of blog posts, and filled dozens and dozens of hours of cable news programming. The “right” was upset by this speech. The “left” liked this speech.
And what did this speech do? What did it mean in way of policy? Absolutely nothing.
Meanwhile- Obama’s Justice Department, you know – the one with the “radical left wing” racialist Eric Holder, defends Bush era policy on wire tapping, on torture, on secrecy, and on detainees.
Biden was on the teevee today telling us how the non changes in policy he and Obama have done in a whole whopping month have not made us “less safe” as the preposterous Dick Cheney asserted a couple weeks back. Thus we get a “debate” among our pundits over how Obama’s non changes to policies his administration is supporting have imperiled us.
Our national politics is akin to the stylized tribal warfare of New Guinea Highlanders where the antagonists take the field of combat, perform intricate dance like troop maneuvers in front of each other- sing poetic insults at each other- and then go home- no one hurt- and nothing changed.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
