The Senate climate debate is going to be in full swing this week with a series of hearings and high-level meetings aimed at producing legislation that will be equal to last month's House bill.

Four top Obama administration officials, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, testify tomorrow by the Environment and Public Works Committee, with Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour to follow on a separate pannel.

On Wednesday morning, the Senate Finance Committee will have hearings on international trade issues that factor into a global warming bill. That same afternoon, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hear about the European Union's five-year effort to control climate-changing emissions while dealing with competition from developing countries.

These will only be the beginning of the Senate climate hearings as the Democratic-led chamber tries to pull a bill together in time for Majority Leader Hary Reid's Sept. 18 deadline for all committees to clear their parts of the legislation.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this bill. Something needs to be done to regulate green house emmissions, but I'm not sure that adding another tax to an already long list is going to make anyone feel much better.
