I tend to think of “Jack’s Times” as something in the future. But today is what we actually have to offer Jack, and I am enjoying what I have to call a sense of pride about the gifts of these times.
Of course I haven’t suddenly forgotten the challenges. What I want to do today is acknowledge and celebrate a point in history which came much sooner than I would have predicted.
We watch President-Elect Obama’s moves in detail. Sure we're anxious about what’s next. But why do I still feel so good? The election marks a turning point. I am marking this time, this turn we’ve made, for Jack, and for a tiny new friend named Chloe.
We don’t know what will happen in the months and years to come. But we can stand on one event which cannot be taken away: We evolved enough to step outside our centuries-old prejudices and elect a mixed-race man to the Presidency. It is not just about President-Elect Barack Obama.
As a result of the election, we have joined the world in a very real and very new way. We have made a statement as a nation which many other nations are celebrating. Perhaps this happened before, but not in any modern context.
This is the first year for Jack and for Chloe, two facts I celebrate every day. It’s the first year for many things. Let it be.
