Don't make me waste my time.
In my classes with Boomers and other newer users of social media (I call it new media), someone always raises their hand to ask a question about Facebook.
Now before we go off on the wrong track, let me say that I use Facebook for certain social purposes. I like the casual way I can check in and see what’s going on with a handful of friends. And I am aware, of course, that some people are making good use of Facebook for business purposes. With quite a bit of tweaking and monitoring.
So I try to appear neutral as I explain why I focus on Twitter as a tool for expanding my business connections as well as expanding my brain in general. Then I get on with the business of teaching new media to a group that is often very green about the culture of digital communication.
Streamlined is streamlined, that's all
Twitter makes my job of connecting and outreach so simple. As I explain to my class participants, once you have just a few high-quality people to follow, and you start to speak up a little yourself, the rest of it is easy. Our brains develop that prized new brain area, and we suddenly have a new platform for thinking about our world, our potential, and how to help others. I love all of that about Twitter.
Here is an article I was referred to today (through Twitter, yes,) from www.pr-squared.com, which helps clarify the culture at Facebook and why I don’t delve into Facebook as a primary business outreach tool:
The Problem with Facebook for Marketers
Just go ahead and read it. You’ll see what I mean.
