This post is part of the Glossary Series, a 100-day conversation designed to develop and clarify the language we use to describe online communication. As Year 2008 comes to a close, the emerging Glossary of Online Communication will be published along with a selection of the comments from my readership. I hope to see your comments among them.
Day #3: Global Brain
Global brain: n. The vast interconnected web of interactive thought which is allowed to emerge through technology, in particular, the Internet. Term brought to us by Peter Russell, in his work "The Global Brain."
Another term people are using to describe the planet as an organism is “gaia.” However, this term is too general to describe the connectivity which is a specific result of technology. I’ll be referring to the global brain often as I talk about the potential of rapid global connectivity. I like this one – if you’ve got something better, speak up now -- below, in the comments.
