“Why am I always harping about Tim Ferriss?” I asked myself this morning, when I was in that waking maelstrom of neural misfires about 5:15 a.m. Customarily I have “another” voice in my head that answers questions. (My demi - Man - behind - the - curtain… Woman… whichever.) The demi-whozit said, “Because you like his logic.”

Hm, I later mused, (after caffeine had my neurons purring,) true, he has a kind of relentless laser-beam logic. Or maybe he’s just consistent. And consistently challenging. Whatever the reason, I find his approach to life worth notice. So I’m putting you on notice of this part of his book, The 4-Hour Workweek, in case you haven’t read it and don’t realize it is – indeed – worth notice.

In the section titled “First and Foremost,” (see what I mean?) Tim lays out an acronym related to what he considers to be the singular importance of being a “dealmaker.” I’ll give you the first sentence of each aspect of the acronym. For the rest, I suggest you take a look at the book.

D.E.A.L. (Page 10)
D for Definition turns misguided common sense upside down and introduces the rules and objectives of the new game.
E for Elimination kills the obsolete notion of time management once and for all.
A for Automation puts cash flow on autopilot using geographic arbitrage, outsourcing, and rules of nondecision.
L for Liberation is the mobile manifesto for the globally inclined.

In the paragraph which follows, Tim makes an interesting point. “Even if you have never considered becoming an entrepreneur in the modern sense, the DEAL process will turn you into an entrepreneur in the purer sense as first coined by French economist J.B. Say in 1800 – one who shifts economic resources out of an area of lower and into an area of higher yield.” I'd like to add that I see Boomers as an economic resource, and I value shifting them/us into innovative areas of higher yield.

Go on over to Tim’s site if you want to see more about the book. I dare you.

Tim Ferriss - the blog

A longish footnote about championing other online entrepreneurs:
I want you to read Tim’s book because I am creating a mobile life for myself and I want a lot more playmates. So this is totally self-centered. Naturally. Along the course of the mobility-providing online income, we online entrepreneurs typically have this thing called “affiliates.” What that means is that we benefit from the exposure we give others, directly, monetarily. That’s fine, it’s a natural system. But you can imagine how it can warp a person’s message, that affiliate relationship.

So, because I want to have an unencumbered conversation about Tim Ferriss and his journeys, I choose not to have an affiliate relationship with his products. No, not even an Amazon link. Some folks in the industry will read this and shake their heads, clucking (have you ever heard that cluck?) “idiot.” Others will raise their eyebrows and smile, thinking something like “good. Well done.”  And so it goes. This footnote, by the way, is something the online communication industry calls “transparency.” I call it “entrepreneurial transparency.” That link takes you to my own glossary.
