This post is part of the Glossary Series, a conversation designed to develop and clarify the language we use to describe online communication. As Year 2008 comes to a close, the emerging Glossary of Online Communication will be published along with a selection of the comments from my readership. I hope to see your comments among them.
Day 14: Collaboration
Collaboration: Combining the intelligence and creativity of two or more people in order to achieve a mutual goal.
Communication online is verging into several important new areas. The push to collaborate is getting stronger, the rewards are growing larger. Looking at the Internet as a global brain, I can see how collaboration would be pretty much unstoppable: It’s the digital equivalent of concerted thought.
I'm collaborating with a fellow entrepreneur, a marketing professional, to create workshops we'll teach this winter. I've taught creativity and writing and brain health in the past, but there is a distinctly different energy that arises in a collaboration. It's exciting, and, well, it's just more fun! That aspect will certainly translate to more benefits for our participants.
Valeria Maltoni gave us an intriguing graphic in this post, Blog Action Day: The Conversation on Poverty. We can see the saturation of available Internet around the globe. She also highlights some of my favorite subtopics: Volunteerism, Collaboration, and Giving. Even the idea of "Blog Action Day" is a collaboration - a huge, open-weave kind of thing.
This glossary conversation is definitely a collaboration. Go ahead and contribute in the comment section below, so I can include you as a collaborator, in the published version later on.
