Barack Obama is also the European dream

November 5, 11:38 AM

Paris newstand, October 2008

_____________________________________

I spent the two weeks leading up to the election in London and Paris. A very informative fourteen days, I have to say, as Brits and Parisians alike wanted to say just one thing when they realized we were Americans: Barack Obama!

On the evening of our departure, as we celebrated my birthday in the hotel room with a few friends, some chocolate cake and champagne, I heard about Europe's view of America as the optimistic child. Their excitement about Obama's nomination was felt everywhere, in their news reports, magazines, and art shows. We found little to no mention of McCain, some blatant artistic references to Palin as a club-wielding cavewoman, and the rest of it was Obama, Obama, Obama.

Now that Barack Obama is the next President Elect, I look forward to the outcomes of new visionary leadership. I don't expect the American President to solve our weighty global problems. But I am deeply inspired to participate in a new foundation for a viable future. This election has already summoned whole new levels of participation from our citizenship, and that is enough, today, to celebrate.

Dream big, dear fellows.

Suzanna
