Remembering a birthday lost to Alzheimer's

August 8, 4:56 PM
by Suzanna Stinnett, S.F. Boomers Examiner

Deanie Stinnett, my mom, would be 78 today, August 8th. If we had not lost her to Alzheimer's disease at 72, that is.

I'm not the only one stomping my feet and saying "Use your brain! Grow it! Don't take aging lying down!" Ruth, also known as Ruth1898 (her birth year), left a tremendous legacy with her videos and blogs. She died just short of her 110th birthday. Now I'm not sure I'd wish everyone that much longevity, but I'm glad she wanted to keep living and was so vigorous in her advice to us.

When Deanie turned 60, she told me, with her bright and somewhat childlike smile, "The great thing about being sixty is that you have all these memories to think about!"

Two years later she could not sort out the photos of the family homes. Five years later she was in a care facility and did not know my name.

Deanie didn't have the kind of boldness that belongs to people like Ruth. I want to stay inspired, and keep growing bolder. Don't most of us want to carry something into the future for our parents?

See Ruth1898 on Growing Bolder.

And please, take your fish oil.

Suzanna
