Use caution to avoid being a victim when you travel.

Travel can be relaxing and fun, especially during a vacation. But being the victim of theft or worse can ruin a vacation and leave lingering regrets.

While families can’t always avoid the criminal element that thrives on hurting innocent people, there are steps you can take to travel safely.

In a hotel, use the hotel safes to guard your valuables. Don’t leave laptops and other expensive electronics sitting around in the room, assuming that it’s safe. Lock it up or put it away in unexpected locations – who’s going to look for your laptop under the bed? Thieves are looking for a quick in and out.

On a recent trip to Miami, a family lost laptops and other electronics when they loaded up their car to leave the hotel – a nice three star chain -- and ran back inside for another quick few of the room and to check-out at the front desk.

The thieves were watching and popped the lock on the passenger side door, which got them into the trunk. They replaced the lock and didn’t take obvious things such as a portable GPS unit or camera in the front seat. This gave them time before the family realized the theft had occurred – easy to do with our dependence on electronic locks. Even with a fence and a security guard on premises, the thieves got away.

Another family experienced a pickpocket the first day after arriving in Italy. They knew the statistics, but were very excited about the first day and taking in the sites. Thieves got away with credit cards, cash and passports.

Don’t be afraid to travel, but do think caution and come prepared. Move your wallet to your front pocket, or better yet purchase a clothes made especially to avoid theft during travel. Travel Smith has a shirt with deep pockets and zippers. Even the best pickpocket would have a hard time getting to your wallet without you noticing if you take that extra step. Other manufacturers also design travel clothes with safety in mind.

And ladies, don’t hang your purse over the back of your chair or place in a basket while you’re shopping – you’re inviting theft.

Remember to enjoy your vacation, but alert – if something doesn’t feel right, stop and look around and check it out. A little caution goes a long way to keep thieves from ruining a long-awaited vacation.
