Most of us at some point have experienced the many facets and emotions that are tied up with love and dating—the extreme bliss, utter agony, complete denial, wonderful contentment, painful resentment, absolute rage, the actuality of losing love, and everything else that tags along for the joyous ride. Being a Singles Examiner, I assembled a list of 20 songs that encompasses the more negative or freeing aspects of losing love, being single, and getting over the one that got away. Check it out (some of these songs may be a bit “girly” but you guys know you love some of them too!):
1) “Misery Business” Paramore: The satisfaction that comes along with waiting it out and getting the one you want and know you deserve. Lyrics: “I waited eight long months, she finally set him free…I never meant to brag, but I got him where I want him now…to steal it all away from you now, but God does it feel so good…”
2) “You’re so Vain” Carly Simon: Sing this one out loud if you were taken advantage of by some conceited Richie Rich that played you for a fool. Lyrics: “You’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you…well, you’re where you should be all the time and when you’re not, you’re with some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend...”
3) “The Sign” Ace of Base: What a “classic!” This song is for the ones who are thinking “Why in the world did I date that last person?! I am so happy now.” Lyrics: “I saw the sign, and it opened up my mind and I am happy now living without you, I’ve left you…”
4) “You Oughta Know” Alanis Morrisette: For the person that is just plain PI$$@& at that A&& who left and went straight for someone else. Lyrics: “…and every time you speak her name, does she know how you told me you’d hold me until you died….but you’re still alive…”
5) “Let You Go” Ashley Parker Angel: Sheer disappointment in having to let go of the unmerciful love that just won’t work out. Lyrics: “I remember when you came with me that night, you said forever…but here I am again with nothing left inside…”
6) “Fighter” Christina Aguilera: For that person who has been through so much BEEP with a “special” somebody but want to inform them that you are thankful to them for making you stronger! Lyrics: “…if it wasn’t for all your torture, I wouldn’t know how to be this way now…so I want to say thank you, cause it makes me that much stronger…”
7) “Piece of My Heart” Janis Joplin: You know you gave your all in the relationship, but still can’t really get over it. Lyrics: “Didn’t I make ya’ feel like you were the only man, didn’t I give ya’ everything that a woman possibly can, honey you know I did…take another little piece of my heart now, baby…”
8) “Over You” Daughtry: We all know this one—for those who were somewhat shocked at your love walking out on you and realize that you are much better without them, though they’ll be hard to forget. Lyrics: “…and when you slammed the front door shut, a lot of others opened up, so did my eyes so I could see that you never were the best for me…”
9) “So What” Pink: We are done, I am happy, and I am going to party without you! Lyrics: “…so what, I’m still a rock star, I got my rock moves, and I don’t need you…I’m having more fun, and now that we’re done, I’m gonna show you tonight, I’m alright, I’m just fine…”
10) “Better Man” Pearl Jam: The classic you are proud to blare when you are out of that relationship where you felt trapped with someone who didn’t deserve you. Lyrics: “She loved him, she don’t want to leave this way, she feeds him, that’s why she’ll be back again, can’t find a better man…”
11) “Any man of mine” Shania twain: For the more high-maintenance types that expect their significant other to go by their way or the high way. Lyrics: “Any man of mine better disagree when I say another woman is looking better than me, and when I cook him dinner and I burn it black, he better say, “Mmm, I like it like that!”
12) “Shoulda’ Said No” Taylor Swift: For the broken-hearted souls who got cheated on and are angry and sad at their loved one’s betrayal. Lyrics: “You should’ve said no, you should’ve gone home, you should’ve thought twice before you let it all go, you should’ve known the word that what you did with her would get back to me…You should’ve said no, baby then you might still have me.”
13) “Never Again” Kelly Clarkson: This goes out to the ones whose relationships ended badly and are extremely P.O’ed about it. Lyrics: “I hope the ring you gave her turns her finger green, I hope when you’re in bed with her you think of me. I would never wish bad things, but I don’t wish you well…never again will I miss you, never again will I fall to you…”
14) “That’s the way” Jo Dee Messina: Anyone who feels that they are getting thrown around in all areas of life, this song goes out to you. Lyrics: “One fine day you wake up, completely, hopelessly fallin’ in love…the only problem is that the man’s not sure…that’s the way it is, you gotta roll with the punches…”
15) “Before He Cheats” Carrie Underwood: Everyone who has been cheated on is well aware of this anthem. Lyrics:
"took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights, slashed a hole in all four tires, maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats…”
16) “Since you’ve Been Gone” Kelly Clarkson: I am sure that everyone has heard this head-banging hit all over the radio! This goes out to the angry, vengeful ones who are sooo over that “friend” that let you down. Lyrics: “Since you’ve been gone, I can breathe for the first time; I’m so moving on….”
17) “It’s My Life” Bon Jovi: Speaks for itself! “This ain’t a song for the broken-hearted, no silent prayer for the faith-departed…you’re gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud, It’s my life, It’s now or never, I ain’t gonna live forever, I just wanna live while I’m alive, It’s my life…”
18) “U + Your Hand” Pink: Guys out there trying to pick up women when you’re out at night, get the point and check this out. Lyrics: “…I was fine before you walked into my life. You know it’s over, before it began, keep your drink just give me the money cuz’ it’s you and your hand tonight…”
19) “Move Along” All-American Rejects: Feel like you’ll never get through it? Just keep yourself busy and keep living your life! Lyrics: “When all you’ve got to keep is strong, move along, move along like I know you do, and even when your hope is gone move along, move along; just to make it through…”
20) “Can’t Hold us Down“ Christina Aguilera (feat. Lil’ Kim): This is specifically to the women out there who have been held to double-standards and/or been put down by a man. Lyrics: “This is for my girls all around the world who have come across a man that don’t respect your worth, thinkin’ all women should be seen not heard, so what do we do, girls? Shout louder!”
So next time you're at the bar and your ex walks in, put a quarter in the jukebox to play one of these favorites.
