If you have read Animal Farm by George Orwell you know how the truth can be bent to control people's minds and behavior. Fox News has given the world a complete education in how to control people's minds and perceptions by attacking the truth as an enemy agenda. At this point in time Fox has poluted and destroyed the individual critical thought of 20% of the voters in this nation so that no matter how much you demonstrate that Glenn Beck is a lying possibly completely narcissistic nut case any one who talks reality and common sense are the liars and nuts. Fox has innoculated them against the truth.
James Carville and Stan Greenberg released a report Friday that showed just how far off the beaten path of reality a two thirds segement of the Republican Party is. You would never know we all grew up in the same country if you listen and let them describe their perceptions.
I am not as willing to dismiss these people as some members of the Independant and Democratic Party part of this society are. These people, if the seeds of their beliefs come to fruition, would be nothing if not the politcal shock troops for a Totalitarian Dictatorship.
As David Corn wrote on 10/16/09, This group believes firmly that they are the only true Americans. They also believe that Barack Obama has a secret agenda to wreck this economy( The Lord only knows Bush actually did all the wrecking ) so that basic individual rights can be curtailed. Seen through this prism the reason that so many believe Obama must fail is because they view any success he has as bringing this country closer to be being destroyed.
While most of us truly believe Orly Taitz, the birther queen, is a fruitcake the Conservative Right believes that Obama's real past is part of the secret. It will never be known. This is because the powerful forces pulling the strings behind Obama don't want us to know. Obama is their front man.
Once the economy is wrecked then the work of destroying Civil liberties can begin. Ultimately America will become a Socialist nation and those who oppose it will be placed in concentration camps. You need to understand that they really believe these things and it also isn't about Race.
Some of you might remember the,"Real Americans," comments from several Republican candidates, most notably Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin. The real America is an America where they believe we would all share the same Faith, Family values, beliefs about America and Freedom. They believe that all of us who don't agree with them are mocking them and destroying this nation. They really believe they are an oppressed minority.
These same people believe there is an underground movement starting to resist the majority of this nation. They identify Fox News, Glenn Beck and Tea Parties as the most obvious manifestations of this.
Those doing the study believed that this was a real problem for Republicans because if they fail to take this hard line they will be believed to have become part of the oppressor majority and two thirds of Republicans may hold these views. I see them as a major threat to American democracy. The rest of us often question the goals, values and beliefs of the Democratic Party. They accept the Fox view of the world with out either hesitastion or question. If you study history you will see many parallels to modern Conservatism and the group Hitler manipulated in his rise to power.
There are many parallels to the nativist movement of Father Coughlin in the 1930's who was a nazi sympathizer and who had a huge following on radio the way Glenn Beck does on T.V. While I for one am not afraid of what Beck would do, because for him it is all about the money and ratings there are some within the movement who would have no qualms about harnessing this movement for completely anti democratic ends. Tyrants often begin by harnessing those who feel like an oppressed minority. We need to take this movement very seriously because if we don't we may repeat ugly and inhumane parts of history because of our own ignorance and indifference.
