Pine Ridge Golf Course: Not bad, but not great

August 12, 9:14 AM

10th hole at Pine Ridge
Yesterday I played at Pine Ridge Golf Course, which is located in Lutherville, just north of Towson. It is the best of the courses run by Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation, a non-profit organization which manages five golf courses owned by Baltimore City: Pine Ridge, Mt. Pleasant, Carroll Park, Clifton Park and Forest Park. Pine Ridge is located on the Loch Raven reservoir and you can see the lake from many of the holes on the course. There is a ton of wildlife on the property, including deer, geese, ducks, rabbits, hawks and more. Also, it isn’t named Pine Ridge for nothing. There are a lot of trees on the course and it makes for tight driving at times.

The course predominately plays for a right to left player, making it difficult for the average golfer. The course could be in better condition but, for a course that gets a lot of play, it’s pretty good. The course is not terribly long from the middle tees but can punish you if you are not straight with the driver.
The facilities are nice. The driving range is great with covered mats to keep the sun off. The putting green, although flat as a table, has plenty of room. There is a separate chipping green near the parking lot. The pro shop is adequate, as are the bathrooms and restaurant.
I had a really good egg salad sandwich at the cabin located between the ninth green and the tenth tee box. In a perfect world, there would be more water coolers on the course but it wasn’t too bad.

All in all, I had a good time. So if you would like some great scenery and decent golf, make a tee time. Be warned, though. This is a course best played during the week as it gets ridiculously crowded on the weekend. Good luck.
