Greystone Golf Course: Baltimore County's Finest

June 18, 5:15 PM

Driving Range

Located in White Hall, Maryland, about 30 to 40 minutes from Baltimore, Greystone Golf Course is the most difficult and nicest course run by Baltimore County.

Today, there was a sign indicating that only the mats were to be used by golfers hitting at the range--seeming to imply that hitting off the grass is an option on certain days.  In addition, they have a putting-only green and a chipping area near the driving range.  The clubhouse is a one-stop-shop with locker rooms, a pro shop and a dining area that offers a fairly simple menu with mostly burgers and sandwiches.

14th hole

The scenery is gorgeous.  While the elevation is not quite along the lines of the courses in the Frederick area, you get some really nice views.  The holes are challenging but fair.  The 14th hole, for example, presents a bit of an illusion.  As shown to the right, the green looks very narrow from the tee but once you get there, you realize it is fairly large with plenty of bail-out room to the right.  The 18th hole (see below) is a fairly long par-5 but has generous landing areas for both the drive and second shot.  The course, as a whole, requires some thought before most shots.  There are several risk/reward holes that are very tempting but often leave you wishing you had attempted the safe shot.

18th hole

We teed off on a Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and, until the last four holes, we never had to wait to hit a shot.  Many courses don't have a beverage cart driving around on slow days; but, on this day, we saw it at least four times. Definitely a very nice plus.

I highly recommend playing this course if you're looking for a challenging layout at a reasonable price.
