Delida Costin’s mom suffered a heart attack in 2006 that put her in a coma.
During the long, tortuous hours of not knowing whether or not her mother would live, Delida re-evaluated her life.
She realized, even though she was a successful vice president at a public company at the time, that was never her dream. What she really wanted was to start and run her own private law practice.
Delida says, “All of a sudden I started dreaming about a new life and desperately wanted her to live to know about it.”
Lucky for Delida, her mom is a fighter and lived to see her daughter reinvent herself.
Today, as a private practice attorney and mediator for her own private practice, Delida enjoys the flexibility and autonomy of running her own show.
She now partners with her clients—officers, directors and senior executives of companies—as their legal counsel to build upon their successes, as well as help them innovate and reach new goals.
As if that weren’t enough, she started doing something else entirely new: she became a writer.
As the Starting Your Own Business Examiner on examiner.com., Delida enjoys giving back to the business community that now supports her business. In her column, she shares inspirational business success stories and offers her own helpful tips and tricks for success.
Her top three tips for momtrepreneurs?
1. Be a copycat. Choose mentors from people who have a style that you admire. You can choose anyone . . . your mom who sets strangers at ease, your children who have engaging curiosity, or a client who has built a successful business. Observe them and try to adopt the traits that you think might work well for you.
2. Get comfortable with discomfort. An entrepreneur faces new decisions daily and the learning curve can be steep for each one. Proceed with caution, but proceed. The ability to keep producing even when you are in new territory is an important skill. Surround yourself with smart experienced people who know how to do what you are learning.
3. “Keep your eyes on the prize.” I pasted this phrase to my computer after I graduated from law school. Our lives and our careers are full and it is easy to be pulled in many directions. Step back and remind yourself of your personal and professional priorities. Then ask yourself whether your projects are supporting those priorities.
Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) is hosting a Women in Business Conference June 9-11 in San Francisco, which Delida encourages all women business owners to attend.
She’ll be speaking at the conference about “Right Entity, Right Funding,” along with Kim Le, CEO and Co-founder, A2Q2.
