This week’s profile is multi-talented actress/director Kerry Waters Lucas. For the last two years, Kerry and her husband Eric have been Artistic Directors of Keegan Theatre’s New Island Project.
New Island’s current offering at Theatre on the Run in Arlington is a very funny production of the hit Irish comedy “Stones in His Pockets,” which is directed by Kerry and stars Eric and Matthew Keenan as all of the play’s 15 characters. For tickets, call 703-892-0202 or visit www.keegantheatre.com.
“I have had an absolute blast directing “Stones in His Pockets,” Kerry says, “Of course, I’m a little prejudiced about Eric’s talent, but Matt (we call him the leprechaun) is a great addition to the troupe.”
After earning a Theater Degree at Vassar, Kerry lived in New York for a few years, but found more opportunities for work in the D.C. area, where she has resided for the last couple of decades. The local companies she has worked for include Source Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, Scena Theatre and Solas Nua.
Kerry became a member of Keegan Theatre’s “family” (literally) three years ago when she and Eric became engaged while playing Blanche DuBois opposite his Mitch (both pictured above) locally and in the Ireland tour of Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire.” “Blanche was always on my list to do,” she says. (Mark A. Rhea, who was profiled a few weeks ago and played the role of Stanley Kowalski, also counts this production among his favorites.)
“Grace in ‘Faith Healer’ would have to be another favorite,” says Kerry, “There are few playwrights other than Brian Friel who make speaking so rewarding. And God knows I love to talk.”
“There one quote that has stayed with me all my life,” says Kerry, “It’s from Nikos Kazantzakis. As a child, I was miserable at math and always good at art, so when I failed a math test, my mother wrote it down for me. ‘Art is the only salvation of the soul. Perhaps upon this brainless earth -- this mad goldfinch – a song may stand more firm in time than brain or bronze.’”
