After interviewing Dr. Robert Sears (known to his young patients as "Dr. Bob") Saturday, Jan. 30, we met Sunday, Jan. 31, at the H-E-B/Huggies-sponsored Houston Healthy Baby & Child Expo, where Dr. Sears discussed his latest book, "HappyBaby: Organic Guide to Baby's First 24 Months."

"Family Nutrition" included a few surprises. For example, how many dirty foods do you feed your family?

If you eat non-organic apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes, kale, lettuce, nectarines, peaches, pears, strawberries and spinach, you are consuming the dirtiest produce in the market ("the dirty dozen"). At least these 12 foods should be organic.

Finally, here are some home products for have healthy lifestyles.

1. Moms-to-be. Your iittle charmers' rooms are decorated, at least in your heads, and paint plays a big part. However, rule no.1 in decorating while pregnant is -- no painting. Still, some products are safe to use. Just protect yourself and your unborn child. "Painting the Baby’s Nursery: Get the Toxic VOCs Out" in Eco Child's Play; Green Guide for Everyday Living;  and Green Home Guide.com, are just a few resources.

   2. Diapers. The best are natural, biodegradable for day, then regular, heavier-duty diapers at night. Best brands include 7th Generation, Earth's Best and Nature Babycare. Diapers.com carries all three brands, as does H-E-B. For wipes, you can find the same brands, plus Tushies.

   3. gDiapers. This new diaper, sold at H-E-B, Amazon.com, Walmart, Lucky Vitamin, and many other stores, is the best of both worlds. With an outer cloth covering and an inner flushable diaper, gDiapers  have sustainability and are just as cute as can be

   4. Mattresses. Discard mattresses older than 2005. Some recommended brands are Ecobaby, Naturepedic, and Zivetique.

   5. Furniture. Buy sustainable forest wood. Good choices are Ikea, Pacific Rim and Ecotots.

   6. Toys should be lightly-painted or bare wood. Some good manufacturers are Selecta, Haba and Green Toys.com

   7. Bathtime. It may surprise you to know your baby only needs one bath a week. If you want to give more, simple water baths are sufficient. For special baths, try Avalon Organics, Jason Baby, Weleda, Burt's Bees and California Baby, most of which can be found at H-E-B.
