IThe colors are changing, and they won't wait for you, so hurry up!  (AP Photo/Toby Talbot)

As we (begrudgingly) head into Fall and experience all the wonders that fall has to offer, cold weather, shorter days, etc., we can’t forget one of the best things (for me anyway) of the year, the turning of the leaves. We are truly blessed to be able to experience the four seasons, and one of the best parts of the seasons is the fall foliage that we are able to experience.

Considering that everyone seems to be tightening their belts and watching their budgets, large family vacations aren’t happening as much as they used to. However, just because you can’t splurge on that trip to Disneyland doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy time together on a trip with your family. In Minnesota we have some of the best places to enjoy the fall, so take advantage, before the snow flies.

Here are some Minnesota's top Fall Foliage destinations.

1. St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN.  I am definitely partial to this area because I am a graduate from SJU, but driving past the Pine Curtain and on to the campus, especially during a football game, is one of the “can’t miss” moments of fall in Minnesota.  You can also enjoy the walking trails around the lake on campus and through the wetlands.

2. Brainerd Lakes Area. Not only can you experience the wonderful colors via car, but there are bike trails that allow you to get breathtaking glimpses of the colors. Plan accordingly as you may also be able to fish one of the many lakes in the area.

3. North Shore of Lake Superior. This may be a bit of a drive for most of us, but it is definitely worth the travel. Not only can you take in the wonderful vistas of Lake Superior, but the walking trails, woods and streams will keep you entertained for days.

4. Lanesboro/Bluff Country. Bring your bike and picnic gear. Not only will you be entertained by the many bike trails, but there is nothing quite like stopping off for a picnic while looking at the beautiful fall colors in this area.

As with many family vacations a small amount of planning and a lot of going with the flow will make for a fun-filled time for all. As all parents know very well, even the best made plans can be left in the dust in no time with children, so enjoy your time together and make the best of any situation that may present itself when on vacation with the family. It’s the only way to travel…and to survive these trips.
