This is the sign for good beer and good pizza.

A while back, I had the opportunity to sample BJ’s Restaurant Brewhouse in Westminster.  As I like to do with all restaurants I visit, I went back for a follow up just to see if the place offered the same, consistent product.  I received a gift card from a friend, downloaded the $5 off coupon anyone can download from the web and decided to go.

The last time we went, we shared a “Field of Greens” salad, a large, vegetarian, deep-dish pizza, and sampled the “Piranha” Pale Ale, which is one of the seven, crafted beers always on tap.  This time, we had the same pizza, but paired it with a different salad, and one different beer.  Everything was just as good as the first time.

This is their lightest beer.

I like that they list many of their beer right on the menu with a picture of that beer so you can see what you are ordering.  The list starts with the lightest beer and ends with the darkest.  I tend to like the lighter beers, but I occasionally want something with more character and I have many friends who really enjoy the darkest, thickest ales.  This menu makes it easy to make a choice that suits your tastes on that particular visit.

Their salads are big enough for two.

The salads are all in the $8 to $10 range, but, as I mentioned before, do not let that deter you.  Each is big enough for two as an appetizer before a meal, or can be eaten as a meal by itself.  We enjoyed the Field of Greens salad last time, and found the “Garden Medley” salad we had on this visit to be just as good.  I like feta cheese anyway, but it was even better with their vinaigrette.  The salad was again a good start.

I liked the tomatoes, but this one could use a little more sauce.

The last time we had the pizza, I was very impressed with the crust.  It had a real, fluffy, homemade character to it.  We again liked the pizza, but noted that more sauce would be nice, and, as with many deep-dish pizzas, the pan left the pizza just a wee bit greasy.  Nonetheless, it is an excellent pizza similar in price to Old Chicago Veggie Seven, but of much better quality.  It is all about the crust.

It is a nice upgrade to the common brewpub.

Both times we visited, we got very good service, but this time they were almost creeping me out.  The manager visited our table twice, even the chef came out once, and our server was very nice, but maybe just a bit over-attentive.  It is obvious that they are working hard to be hospitable, and, if you like that kind of treatment, it is cool, but, for most of us, it is excessive.  Still, I will never grade a restaurant down for trying too hard.  BJ’s is a good place for both microbrew and dinner, and has now passed muster twice.
