Let the turkeys have their day in the Sun.

While we are all getting in the holiday spirit and enjoying a season of Thanksgiving, why not spare a turkey and give thanks for the cornucopia of other foods available in our great country by trying different, animal friendly foods? That is the whole idea behind “Turkey-Free Thursday” sponsored by the organization Rocky Mountain Animal Defense

Turkey-Free Thursday is not only turkey-free, it is animal free and completely vegan. Vegans are the only true vegetarians. They never eat any animal products of any kind. That not only means no red meat, no pork, no chicken and no fish, it also means no milk, no eggs, no animal fat, no cheese, and none of anything that comes from an animal causing that animal to suffer or lose its life. Trying vegan at Thanksgiving is like trying Lent before Easter, but you will be surprised how little you miss and how good it all tastes.

The menu for this event starts with Organic Tofu Turkey, bread stuffing, savory vegetable gravy and whole cranberry sauce. If the Tofu is a bit much for you, there will also be a vegetable stew with a gluten-free toasted crust. The sides rounding out the meal are Green Beans Almondine, mashed potatoes, (without butter and milk), candied yams and fresh dinner rolls. The meal also comes with split pea soup, tossed salad, herbal tea or coffee and Magic Pumpkin Pie.   They also promise a few, other, nice surprises, but I cannot imagine what those might be.

This event will be Thursday, November 27, 2008, Thanksgiving Day at Highlands United Methodist Church, 3131 Osceola Street in Denver beginning at 1:00 p.m. A second seating will take place at 5:00 p.m. the same day. The price is $29 for adults, ($24 if purchased in advance), only $10 for kids ages five to fourteen and FREE for all people younger than age five. It is sponsored by Rocky Mountain Animal Defense and catered by Govinda’s, 1400 N. Cherry Street, 303-333-5461, the place with the vegetarian buffet that changes everyday and is always just $5 to $8.

Take a walk on the wild side this year and try something new and different. You may be surprised at how good vegan eating can be, but it certain you will make some turkey happy as well as Benjamin Franklin.  After all, Franklin did propose the Wild Turkey as the National Bird, and you wouldn’t eat a National Treasure, would you?
