Prop. 13 has helped make California ungovernable and has brought our state to the brink of disaster. Veteran political reporters Jerry Roberts and Phil Trounstine explain why in an op-ed in today’s L.A. Times.
Thirty years later, the ghost of Jarvis and his legacy initiative still aim antipathy, scorn and disdain at California's government and its leaders. Proposition 13 was the first, and most far-reaching, in a cascade of political decisions over the last three decades that have shaped the dysfunctional structure of governance in the state.
I would add that the antipathy, scorn and disdain also target our entire public educational system – K-12 and higher education alike – and the teaching profession. Unfortunately, the mainstream media (probably cluelessly) help fuel that antipathy, scorn and disdain when they cheer on “school reforms” that focus on disparaging and when possible shoving out experienced educators.
