It’s graduation week in San Francisco public schools, with ceremonies happening all over the city all week.

At San Francisco’s Aptos Middle School yesterday, the procession of nearly 300 graduates crossing the stage led off with the severely disabled students in wheelchairs in their caps and gowns, and then the deaf/hearing-impaired (a special focus at Aptos). The audience applauded in sign, wagging our hands in the air.

After the ceremony the nearly 300 graduates poured out onto the lawn, the front stairs and the sidewalk, a flood of black gowns in the bright sun. The kids assembled themselves, without bidding, into a massive group pose, as they had also done the previous night at the graduation dance in the gym. It wasn't just the girls hugging and crying when that sappy "Friends Forever" song started up.

Balboa High School students who happened to be Aptos alumni made this video, “Why I Love My Public School,” for Parents for Public Schools-San Francisco. This seems like the week to post it.
