DC United's 1-1 tie at the Columbus Crew on Saturday put the club 6th in the latest edition of the MLS Computer Rankings, compiled by me to show the position of the 15 Major League Soccer clubs based on strength of schedule and home/away form.
United less than 10 points in the rankings away from being fourth, against two of the three teams it has recently played in the league (Columbus and Seattle). DC has a 5-3-9 record, good for 24 points and a tie with the Chicago Fire for first place in the Eastern Conference.
The Houston Dynamo, who possess the league's best record at 9-3-4 (31 points) are the top team in the computer rankings, as well.
Here is the complete list, with rank, team name, record, and points. Remember, the points are cumulative throughout the season - which, if you're a Houston fan, is great. If you're a New York fan, well, there's always next century.
1. Houston (9-3-4, 530 points)
2. Chivas USA (8-4-3, 369)
3. Chicago (6-3-6, 364)
4. Columbus (5-3-8, 246)
5. Seattle (6-3-7, 243)
6. DC United (5-3-9, 239)
7. Colorado (5-4-6, 106)
8. Los Angeles (4-3-9, 25)
9. Real Salt Lake (5-6-5, -71)
10. Kansas City (5-6-4, -88)
11. New England (4-5-4, -100)
12. Toronto FC (6-6-4, -156)
13. FC Dallas (4-7-5, -219)
14. San Jose (3-8-4, -506)
15. New York (2-13-4, -1050)
Notice, the margin between #14 San Jose and #15 New York is astoundingly large, in relation to the margins between the positions of the other clubs. How bad has it gotten for the Red Bulls?
