DC United rookie midfielder Brandon Barklage is out for the season, the club announced, after tearing an ACL in the US Open Cup victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders at the SoccerPlex on Tuesday night. Barklage is lost for the season.
United won the match, 2-1, on goals from Boyzzz Khumalo and Andrew Jacobson (Behind the Badge has highlights). The club will host Rochester, again at the SoccerPlex, on July 21 in a semifinal match. Houston and Seattle will meet in the other semifinal.
Barklage, a rookie from St. Louis University, has played 98 league minutes this season in four appearances. He also scored a goal in United's 5-3 win over the New York Red Bulls which qualified DC for the Open Cup tournament.
While Barklage doesn't regularly feature in the league lineup for United, his loss is another blow to a roster already short. The team is using just 22 of its 24 top-level spots after the release of defender Anthony Peters and goalkeeper Louis Crayton in the last couple weeks. Midfielder-forward Santino Quaranta is away with the US at the Gold Cup, where Canadian defender Dejan Jakovic is also playing. Both squads look certain to advance to the elimination rounds, making their availability for United's next league match (July 18 vs. Colorado, 8 p.m., RFK), somewhat questionable depending on the advancement of the respective teams.
* Speaking of Quaranta, he scored his first international goal last night as the United States beat Honduras, 2-0, at RFK Stadium. Quaranta's low laser finished off a beautiful passing buildup by the Americans, who doubled their lead minutes later when Brian Ching scored. The US are 2-0 in the tournament and will play Haiti on Saturday night.
Watch Quaranta talk about the goal and the win here, also via Behind the Badge.
Former United goalkeeper Troy Perkins recorded the shutout for the United States, and former DC midfielder Freddy Adu played 63 minutes. Adu, however, won't appear for the rest of the Gold Cup.
