Book review: Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life

Whether or not you agree that detoxing and fasting are more than popular buzzwords in health circles today, many won't argue that as a society, America could stand to consume more vegetables, and their vitamins and nutrients in the process.

In the book Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Diets, Cherie Calbom, MS, along with John Calbom, MA, discuss the toxicity of the body and how fasting and detoxing with specific regimens as outlined in the book can benefit the body.

From the back cover:

In this exciting new guide, health guru  Cherie Calbom presents a holistic fresh juice program that can give you more energy and help you to heal, lose weight, prevent disease, and boost your immune system. Her comprehensive, daily dietary plan will show you how to unlock the power of fresh vegetable juices by introducing the important vitamins and minerals and flushing harmful chemicals from the body.

The dozens of recipes in this book are broken down into categories such as vegetable juice recipes and smoothies, blender drinks and cold soups. The book sports a very sexy A-Z list of foods highest in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, and tips for purchasing a quality juicer are included. The book advocates lower carbohydrate as a way of eating, pushing aside processed foods for healthy, quality food choices.

While I do not personally advocate fasting (unless it's me moving faster to get to the checkstand) or flushes (what can I say? I love the blue toilet water) and believe that detoxing is questionable (the body has built-in filters for detoxing), for folks looking for nourishment in liquid form, more vegetable options, and  interesting information regarding a whole foods lifestyle, this book might be worth checking out-- if minimally for lower carb juicing options.
