Hopes to be less than half the woman I am today.

Without the bling of fiber discussions or a sexy new recipe, it probably seems that a column about the progress of weight loss isn't as exciting as pizza fashioned from cauliflower or the importance of riboflavins. (I know!)

I began my low-carb journey for the last time on January 1st, 2008, and am snappy-happy to report I have lost 86 pounds so far this year (I didn't really lose a third grader, unless you count the time I forgot one somewhere).

01/01/2008: Started my weight loss
02/04/2008: 32 pounds lost
03/02/2008: 42 pounds lost
04/07/2008: 61 pounds lost
5/05/2008: 69 pounds lost
6/ 09/2008: 74 pounds lost2008: 81 pounds lo
6/30/2008: 86 pounds lost

Why give you the monthly breakdown like a very unsexy amortization schedule? For starters, I hope to make the point that weight loss is not linear, and not always fast.

The break down also shows that even with those stalls and slow-downs, weight losses like mine are not necessarily abnormal or unusual for folks who, with doctor supervision, put themselves into lipolysis through a healthy, whole foods low-carbohydrate lifestyle.

I eat the things I share through recipes here at this rocking column and through my blog. There is no secret, save for making a way of life a way of life and not a crash diet. It's about making positive and healthy food choices and working through issues with food (hint: fuel, not make sexy time).

Is my doctor supportive of my low-carb lifestyle?

I went to get my back checked recently (I'd done something funky to it), and he told me that basically I need a physical therapist. Apparently what I did wasn't a pinched nerve. I, being stubborn, told him I didn't want a physical therapist. He leaned back in his chair, stretched out his arms and then folded them, and bemusedly put his pen to his lip. "Now why wouldn't you want a physical therapist? It's a personal trainer your insurance pays for. And it will help you strengthen your muscles."

At this point, he looked down at his chart and almost fell from of his rolling chair. "You've lost 75 pounds?! My Gosh! 75 pounds?! And your blood pressure is great! What the heck!"

I calmly said, "Well, when I saw you last year you said to me, 'I don't care how you do it. Lose weight.' So I did."

By now he was very animated. "That's it? You just went and did it? Like that? Since January? My chart shows you're closer to having lost 90 pounds since last year (Me: Ohemgee! I must have been huge!!!). And you just went and did it," he said, rubbing his chin, smiling.

"You told me to." I looked at him and tapped my knees, shrugging.

He leaned forward.

"Well, the next time I see you, I want to to fix the Middle Eastern crisis, and solve our energy problems."

He wrote me the prescription for pain medication and muscle relaxants, still muttering, surprised, with eyebrows elevated, "because I told her to."

Doctors aren't used to patients doing what they tell us to do, apparently.

I took possession of my scrip and began down the hall, when he popped around the corner and called, "Hey! While you're at it, stabilize the economy!"

Stabilizing the economy is one thing. With too many variables at play in an unsure market, it is much easier to focus on weight loss and better health than macroeconomics.

If you haven't already begun, take the next half of this year to make it your best ever. Success is yours through support, accountability, education, choosing a plan which works for your needs, a positive relationship with your health care professionals, and through a healthy dose of motivation.

How are you doing in your journey towards health and happiness in 2008?

Drop me a line and share.

While you're at it, pop in and give your best to Bill Boucher who is working his own weight loss success. Go Bill!
