Science events and lectures around the San Francisco Bay area this week. Highlights this week include what is sure to be a lively and controversial talk by Aubery de Grey on viewing the aging process as a disease that can - and should - be cured. de Grey has outraged many in the mainstream medical and scientific communities with his claims about the possibility of extending human life, but he has also brought the topic into the limelight of public awareness in a way that no one else has been able to do. If you come to this lecture, you will see why.
Other events this week include a talk about memory and aging, at the Down to a Science event Monday evening, and two promising halloween parties at The California Academy of Sciences and the Chabot Space & Science Center.

Ah, Fuhgettaboudit!: Memory & the Aging Brain
Dr. Adam Gazzaley - UCSF
Down to a Science
Atlas Cafe, at the corner of 20th St & Alabama
Join Dr. Adam Gazzaley from U.C. San Francisco as he explains why it's normal to forget and the science behind why our memory fumbles with age. You'll learn what's happening in the brain when we pay attention and when we're distracted.
Adam will give an inside look into the state-of-the-art scientific research aimed at understanding the neural basis of attention and memory. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Gazzaley will talk about what we can do to keep our minds fit and nimble as we get older.
This is a special joint event with UCSF's Science Cafe.

Aubrey de Grey on Living Forever
Jewish Community Center
3200 California St, San Francisco
In a remarkable challenge to convention and science, Cambridge researcher Aubrey de Grey argues that the process of aging is merely a disease, and a curable one at that. De Grey, a computer scientist and biogerontologist, believes humans could live for centuries if we could just approach the aging process as "an engineering problem." Learn about de Grey's distinctive approach to "solving" the problems of aging - and potentially living until the age of 1,000.
"Aubrey de Grey is a man of ideas, and he has set himself toward the goal of transforming the basis of what it means to be human." - MIT Technology Review
