Sen. Udall wants constituents' comments
On Tuesday, New Mexicans will have the opportunity to talk to our newest Senator Tom Udall at a town hall discussion at the VFW Post on Girard Boulevard at noon, and I plan to be there to hear what other constituents and veterans have to say.
It’s a rare opportunity with this new Presidential Administration and its new era of governmental transparency – although some complain Barack Obama isn’t as open as we thought he would be. Consider the torture photographs and the e-mail correspondence of the former administration under George W. Bush.
What, other than a sick curiosity would be want to view the entire catalog, if you will, of photographs of the illegal torture methods that U.S. solders participated in under the last Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and the once-elusive and now-surprisingly talkative, former VP Dick Cheney. (Cheney has talked in more public forums and for paid speaking events than he did during the former eight-year Republican stint in the White House.)
Needless to say, Udall issued an e-mail invitation to his town hall meeting, and it reads in part, “I'll tell you what I'm fighting for and give you an update on what Congress has done this year.
“In less than six months, we have secured health insurance for 11 million American children, helped ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work and passed legislation to protect American families from predatory credit card companies.
“We have also passed an economic recovery package that will create 22,000 jobs in New Mexico and invest more than $600 million in New Mexico schools so that our children have the skills to succeed in the future. I want to talk to you about these achievements and the many other challenges that Congress is working to address.
“More importantly, I want your feedback and input about the issues that are important to you, your family and the community.
Udall said staff members will also assist anyone who requests it, assistance with a federal agency.
Hello Labor Dept.? I am not sure how the caveat in the federal extended unemployment benefits was passed, but I do have questions as I face homelessness.
Also for veterans, there will be copies of the New G.I. Bill Benefits Resource Guide, complete with application forms that I created to help veterans apply for the new education benefits being distributed Aug. 1.
