So many activities, so little time

Let me plan your North Beach weekend for you.

On Saturday, you'll rise early and attempt to touch your toes. Failing miserably, you'll take a quick shower and pop in 1.) at Caffe Greco for a cappuccino, or 2.) at Gino & Carlo, for a little eye-opener. Thus fortified, you'll march right over to the North Beach/Joe DiMaggio Playground to devote the hours between 9 a.m. and noon to a volunteer workday, which you had the foresight to RSVP for by calling 415-621-3260.

You'll be helping replace sand in the playground, my friend, and it's high time, too. On their last pass through the neighborhood, the clipboards from the Neighborhood Parks Council gave our playground the dismal grade of D on their annual report card. (Although everything is relative: I remember being thrilled at getting a D in geometry.) Dirty sand was the main reason why, so some fresh stuff is being trucked in and volunteers are needed to help spread it around.

You'll spend Saturday evening with some Ben Gay and a bucket of gin, arising fresh as a daisy on Sunday, in plenty of time to head over to Washington Square for a performance by our burg's endearing and enduring traveling guerrilla theater, the S.F. Mime Troupe.

The troupers will be performing "Red State," their election-year farce about a flyblown Kansas town on which the entire presidential election hinges (oh, lordy, let's hope not). A musical interlude kicks things off at 1:30 p.m. and there is no admission, in keeping with the Troupe's everything-worth-having-is-free activist roots. Feel free to slip 'em a donation, though.

And looking ahead ....

If you enjoy the Mime Troupe's farce, you'll absolutely love attending the next scheduled debate featuring our myriad candidates for District 3 supervisor. Co-hosted by the North Beach Merchants Association and the North Beach Chamber of Commerce (which is kind of like the Hatfields and the McCoys hosting a hoedown together), the debate will be held next Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the San Francisco Art Institute, beginning at 7 p.m.

The "debate," if you can call a 10-candidate pie fight a debate, will feature former Chronicle editor Phil ("I married a Komodo dragon and got bit on the ankle by Sharon Stone") Bronstein as moderator. Verbal hijinks, if not outright high dudgeon, should ensue as at least half our candidates will attempt to answer the question: What the hell am I doing here, anyway? Don't miss it!

Celebrating an artist's life, well lived

October 16, 12:12 PM

Fishing for a compliment? Forget it

October 13, 1:33 PM
