You gotta hand it to Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier. Thanks to her clumsy, ignorant provincialism, the Italian Heritage Day parade will exchange a baseball legend for a garbageman. And not even a San Francisco garbageman, but some guy from Marin County. Nice move, babe.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda was all but signed, sealed and delivered to serve as grand marshal for Sunday's parade through North Beach. But Michela had to stick her nose into things, insulting Lasorda and the Dodgers organization. So Lasorda backed out and we get some guy called Joe Garbarino from the Marin Sanitary Service. He's probably a great guy, you know, but ... jeez.
It may not be Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson, but it's pretty damned close.
Lasorda understood, as Alioto-Pier apparently does not, that baseball is only a game. The Giants-Dodgers rivalry is historic and passionate, but it's supposed to be fun. And few people made it more fun than Lasorda did.
"I wanted to do it because I love San Francisco, I really do," Lasorda told the Chronicle. "I love the city. We have a rivalry there. What the hell. That's the way it is."
Well, Tommy, that's the way it should be. But never underestimate the idiocy of a San Francisco politician trying to do something completely self-serving. Especially one who clearly doesn't know a damned thing about baseball.
Quick, Michela, explain the infield fly rule.
So Tommy will spend Sunday at Dodger Stadium instead, trying to rally the boys in blue against a tough Philadelphia nine. I hope the Phillies sweep the Dodgers out of the series and go all the way. But if the Dodgers somehow find a way to battle back and squeak by, I'll feel good for Lasorda at least.
As for you, Michela, I hope they trade you to Kansas City.
