National Doughnut Day: Free donuts
National Doughnut Day is an annual celebration that takes place on the first Friday of June. The event began back in the 1930s as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. The special day also recognized and paid homage to special women known as “Lassies,” who prepared or served doughnuts to World War I soldiers in France.
Several well-known establishments join in on the annual event by offering free donuts. While we are eating our free donuts this June 5th, let’s remember those brave women who helped make a soldier’s life a bit sweeter.
