November 13th is dedicated to a popular Al Capp comic character, Sadie Hawkins. Although the event may be celebrated on different days in November, the first mention of Sadie Hawkins Day was first made on November 13th, 1937.
Poor Sadie. She was not very attractive. In fact, many said she was downright ugly! In order to find a husband for his 35-year-old spinster daughter, her pa created Sadie Hawkins Day. A special foot-race was held in the town of Dogpatch. When an unmarried woman caught up with a single man, he had to marry her.
The idea caught on. Colleges and schools around the country held honest-to-goodness, real-live Sadie Hawkins Day events, including races and dances. Women were able to turn-the-tables and grab-the-bull-by-the-horns.
So ladies, in honor of Sadie Hawkins, if there is a special fella' in your life that makes your heart pitter-patter, go ahead and ask him out! Happy Sadie Hawkins Day!
