Did you know a very special day is set aside every year to encourage smokers and tobacco users to put out those butts and kick the habit? Not to be confused with Kick Butts Day, the Great American Smokeout is an annual event that takes place on the third Thursday of November, one week before the Thanksgiving holiday.
The idea started years ago, by Arthur Mullaney. The idea gradually picked up steam and in 1977, the American Cancer Society took the event nationwide.
Besides encouraging tobacco-users to quit, the Great American Smokeout also raises awareness about the dangers of smoking. Did you know smoking is linked to 15 different cancers? Not only is smoking bad for your health, second-hand smoke is not healthy for friends and loved ones either. Once you start, quitting can be a difficult task for many. So if you don't smoke, don't start.
2009 marks the 34th Great American Smokeout. This year, the special day falls on November 19th, 2009.
