It's about time!   Standard Time, that is.   With many people focusing on the upcoming Halloween festivities, some may not realize Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends the same weekend as Halloween. Standard Time begins at 2:00 A.M. local time, on Sunday, November 1st, 2009.

First established into law by the United States Congress in 1918, standard and daylight time has had a few ups-and-downs over the years. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 changed daylight and standard time again. Amending Section 3 of the Uniform Time Act of 1966, as of 2007, daylight time begins on the second Sunday in March and will end on the first Sunday in November. Guam, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and many areas in Arizona do not observe daylight time.

To help remember which direction to move the clock, many people refer to a little ditty from long ago, “Spring forward, fall back.”  This weekend, you will move your clock back one hour, which means one hour of extra sleep!  That almost makes adjusting all those clocks worth it!

And along with adjusting the clocks in the home, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also reminds people to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It could save a life!

Next year, Daylight Saving Time begins again on the second Sunday in March, which will fall on March 14th, 2010.
