Bay to Breakers: A heaping helping of crazy since 1912

May 18, 12:09 PM

Sunday morning brought Bay to Breakers, the annual 12k footrace that runs (but mostly dawdles) from the Financial District to Ocean Beach.

One thing struck me as I wandered around SOMA at about 7:45 am: this is easily the city's frattiest major event. Behold:

Of course, some folks thought that it was a perfect platform for engaging in the type of hard-hitting political discussion that you'd ordinarily find exclusively on cable news:

While others made sure that the Empire was well represented.

Then, of course, there were the self-defeating proselytizers, always masochistic enough to imagine that a hedonistic event in San Francisco is the perfect time to troll for converts.

Not quite sure what "Warning god haters adulterers greedy thieves liars drunks mockers fornicators homosexuals judgment" is supposed to mean. But hey, have no fear! If you're as confused as I am, you can always just take the easy route and...

Mmm...blind faith. Delicious.

I next went up the hill to Alamo Square, where photographers like to take pictures of the race as it nears its highest point—a panorama of wheezing and misery set against the picturesque Painted Ladies.

If you're lucky, you might even catch a naked Santa Claus returning the favor by taking your picture.

For all that, my favorite find of the day was this kittenish character down on Howard Street. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Hot Gas Valve Veronica:

Oh, San Francisco. Nobody has to ask you to open your golden gate.
