Craigslist sued by Cook County Sheriff
Craigslist, that bastion of mindless entertainment, smut and probably the most common way to acquire used furniture, is in trouble again. Not for its Missed Connections or posts on overpriced American Outfitters floor lamps, but for its “erotic services.”
Cook County’s sheriff
Tom Dart is planning to announce a lawsuit against Craigslist because of its reputation as “the single largest source of prostitution in the nation” according to an
AP article released today.
This isn’t the first time CL has taken heat for its posts. In 2006, a Chicago fair-housing group filed a lawsuit against Craigslist, over apartment listings that advertised discriminatory language like this: “African Americans and Arabians tend to clash with me so that won't work out.” But according to the
NY Times article about the suit:
“Court decisions so far have almost universally rejected claims against online companies that publish others’ speech. Internet companies have been held immune from suits for libel, invasion of privacy, fraud, breach of contract and housing discrimination.”
So, it seems Craigslist has little to worry about, at least in terms of liability. It does seem rather strange that Cook County would sue Craigslist now, after using its ads to target sex workers and child trafficking recently for
Operation Cross Country. This lawsuit seems like yet another red herring and a complete waste of taxpayer resources, especially since they probably don’t stand a chance of winning.
Taxpayers, your thoughts?
