On his 40th birthday, legendary Colorado Avalanche captain and centerman Joe Sakic decided it was time to call it quits after a career that is sure to land him in the Hall of Fame. Sakic’s final season was cut short by injuries (including a bizarre hand injury following a snow blower incident).
Fans will remember Sakic’s easygoing off-the-ice personality, and his on-the-ice brilliance that helped lead the Avalanche to two Stanley Cup Championships (1996 and 2001).
This town will always belong to the beloved John Elway, but for those who don’t know much about hockey, Sakic is as big of a legend in the NHL as Elway is in the NFL.
Sakic retires with the seventh most points scored in NHL history, scoring 625 goals and assisting on 1.016 others.
Truly a class act – we’ll miss seeing #19 donning an Avalanche jersey on the ice.
