Last week soda distributor, Joe Iacino, died in Denver at the age of 95. While we don't know the guy by name, many of us will recognize him by his legacy. Iacino was “the guy” who helped to coin the name of the Denver Broncos defensive team as the “Orange Crush” in the late 1970s.
Apparently calling the Broncos defense "Orange Crush" was a public relations gimmick that not only helped him sell the popular orange carbonated drink but also a name that has become a rich part of the Denver vernacular for decades. Even today, Denver’s single greatest Broncos player of all time, John Elway, has paid homage to Iacino by naming his arena football team the Colorado Crush.
