Brian Bonsall of “Family Ties” fame in trouble with Boulder police

July 16, 10:11 AM

Little Andy Keaton – er, Brian Bonsall – the cute boy who played Alex P. Keaton’s younger brother on Family Ties, is in trouble with the law. Last year, the Boulder resident was sentenced for assaulting his girlfriend.

According to Boulder Daily Camera, Bonsall will appear before a Boulder judge today where he will be facing accusations of violating his probation. Apparently, Bonsall failed to attend court-ordered domestic violence classes, missed daily breathalyzer tests and submitted a positive breath test.

Bonsall’s probation officer recommends the child actor be sentenced to a 60-day term of work release where he can leave the Boulder County Jail to work during the day but return to the prison at night. Bonsall’s officer also wants the court to order him to a “strict sobriety schedule,” attend four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week, and pay for his domestic violence classes.

And in case you were wondering what got Bonsall in trouble in the first place, well, Bonsall was arrested last March after police said “he poured alcohol in his girlfriend’s face as she slept.” He also was accused of “putting his arm around his girlfriend’s neck and throwing her into a bed when she tried to leave their apartment,” according to the Boulder Daily Camera. Bonsall had pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and was under two years of probation.

Bonsall used to be in a Boulder-based rock band, Thruster, which according to the band’s MySpace page, disbanded in November 2006. He is also a Boulder High School graduate and has been ticketed for underage drinking in Broomfield and Boulder counties, among other “drinking” related incidents.

DCE guesses that some child actors were never meant to grow up.
