Tony Abreu went a whopping 5-for-5 driving in the decisive runs to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes (55-47) to a 5-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs on a sun-splashed Monday afternoon at Isotopes Park.
Abreu, who came a triple shy of the cycle, tied a franchise record with three doubles and crushed his third leadoff home run in the past nine games to send the Isotopes to their fifth consecutive series win at home.
The switch-hitting infielder sent the fourth offering from Jose Ascanio (2-4) over the right-field wall to open the first inning and an early 1-0 Isotopes lead. After anA.J. Ellis single, J.D. Closser slashed a two-out single to left to score Ellis and make it 2-0 Isotopes.
Left-hander Eric Stults supplied yet another solid outing, picking up his fourth straight win with six solid innings of work. Stults (4-1) cruised through the first and second innings before surrendering single tallies in the third and fourth.
Sam Fuld delivered an RBI fielder’s choice in the third and Bobby Scales sent home Jason Dubois who led off the fourth with a double to create a 2-2 deadlock.
The two runs would be all that southpaw allowed, marking his fourth straight start with six innings and two runs or fewer allowed.
The Isotopes were quick to respond, however, with Abreu coming through immediately in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Sergio Garcia poked a base hit to left and moved to second on a Stults sacrifice bunt. Abreu, who had already doubled in the second inning to extend the Isotopes streak of doubles to 10 games, roped another two-bagger, sending home Garica to break the tie and put the Isotopes up 3-2.
Stults chipped in two more scoreless innings before Major League rehabbing Cory Wade tossed a perfect 1-2-3 seventh.
Josh Lindblom added two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to pick up his first save.
Albuquerque added two more in the eighth to a Jason Repko RBI single before Abreu became the sixth Isotope in team history to rack up five hits, using his third double to drive in Repko and put the Isotopes on top 5-2.
Albuquerque will welcome in the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Tuesday for a pivotal four-game series that could decided who win the PCL’s American Southern Division.
On the hill for the Isotopes will be right-hander Charlie Haeger (9-6, 3.87) who will take on ‘Hawks righty Guillermo Moscoso in a 7:05 PM MT start from Isotopes Park.
