Last week marked the kick-off of a series designed to help newcomers explore Seattle. Of course, seasoned Seattleites eager to rediscover some of the city's urban treasures can come along for the ride, too.
This week, we move from the U-District to the neighborhood of Fremont -- also known as "The Center of the Universe."
Here are four stops worth your while as journey to the center of the world:
1.) The Fremont Troll - It's no surprise Fremont is sometimes called "The Artist's Republic of Fremont," considering the ubiquitous presence of public art. So don't be surprised if you stumble on a giant troll wielding a Volkswagen under the bridge -- it's just one of the neighborhood's oddities/hidden gems.
2.) Gas Works Park - Gas Works Park is a perfect example of Fremont's quirky public art. This former gas plant site was converted into industrial art, housed in what's one of the city's most popular parks. It's a great spot for kite-flying, gazing out on Lake Union, or getting a great view of downtown.
3.) Theo Chocolate Factory - Theo Chocolate is the first and only organic and Fair Trade chocolate factory in the country. Chances are, you've been seeing the chocolate around town (and across the country). Stop by for a daily tour and tasting. You won't leave empty-handed.
4.) The Fremont Market - The Fremont Market is so much more than just a farmers market. It's also a year-round "European-style street market," where you can buy everything from vintage clothes to original art to antiques. Think of it as the garage sale of your dreams.
Happy exploring! Next stop Capitol Hill...
