New York's known for its pizza, Boston's got baked beans, and you can't leave New Orleans without trying the gumbo.

But if you're new in Seattle -- or just passing through -- what foods do you absolutely have to try to complete your Seattle experience?

While the answer depends on the season, some of these are year-round classics.  So here's a delicious list of what puts Seattle on the map:

  1. Coffee - Okay, this is an obvious one -- and it isn't exactly food -- but there's a reason Seattle is know for its coffee.  Branch out from the big chains and try the local roasterias that make espresso seem like a gift from the gods.
  2. Seafood - This is a broad category, and Seattle's got amazing seafood year-round.  Some of the most famous include the Copper River salmon (or Sockeye, Coho, or any other local salmon) and of course, Dungeness crab.
  3. Berries - Seattle's the land of plenty when it comes to berries.  If you're in town for the summer, make sure you sample some Rainier cherries.  And while you're at it, try the strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, too.
  4. Apples & Pears - Fortunately, the deliciousness continues into the fall with a wide variety of Washington State apples.  Go apple-picking, buy them from a roadside stand, or find them at the grocery store.  They're everywhere -- and so are juicy pears.
  5. Wine - Again, technically not a food.  But Washington State wines are not to be missed.  The state's becoming a major player in national wine production, and heading out the wineries in and around Seattle is a great way to spend a day.
